Hull FC head coach John Cartwright to leave Super League club at end of season

Hull FC head coach John Cartwright will leave the club at the conclusion of the 2026 Super League season.

Cartwright was appointed by the Black and Whites ahead of the 2025 campaign. Hull FC finished seventh in his first year and are sat ninth in the 2026 table with three wins and four losses after seven rounds.

The Australian has taken charge of 39 games for the club so far, winning 19 of them. He was contracted until the end of the 2027 season but the club have decided to release him from that contract a year early.

Hull's chief executive officer Richie Myler said: "John joined the club during a challenging period and has played an important role in restoring stability and competitiveness on the field.

"The board would like to place on record its sincere thanks for John's contribution during his time with the club.

"John will continue to lead the first-team squad for the remainder of the current campaign, and has the support of the full club as we work together to finish the season as strongly as possible."

It has been reported by Love Rugby League that, following a meeting with Cartwright on Tuesday morning in which they were told of his departure, the players decided not to to take part in a scheduled training session.

The players reportedly want communication from club officials on the decision.

The club also confirmed they are in the process of securing a head coach for the 2027 Super League season and will provide an update in due course.

It is reported that Hull FC have formally approached former Catalans Dragons head coach and current Warrington Wolves assistant coach Steve McNamara.

McNamara played for the Black and Whites from 1989 until 1996.
